What many people do not realize is that searching with different words or phrases can give them better quality and save them money. While they may not always have a current discount on one site, you may find it on another. The savings can be as much as ten percent. Tips to Make Roses or Flowers Last Longer
When you first receive them:
If you can wait to put them on display, placing them in the refrigerator for up to six hours before arranging, can prolong the life of the flowers for many days extra.
Before arranging, place the stems underwater in cool water while you cut them with a sharp knife at an angle. This helps them immediately take up water into the stem.
Remove all leaves from the areas of the stems that will be touching or in water. Be sure to do this for any filler as well as for the roses or flowers in your bouquet.
Arrange them in cold, not warm or hot water. If the flowers are wilted very warm 110F water can sometimes be used to restore wilted flowers or force open buds but be careful as it can also dehydrate them and cause them to die more quickly.
Put in a floral preservative like floralife, which usually comes with the bouquet. If not you can use a tiny drop of Clorox and a tablespoon of Sprite. Some people use a copper penny and an aspirin. The idea is to kill bacteria and fungi. You can also use 2 tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice to 1 quart of water to create an acidic condition that discourages growth of bacteria or fungi.
Place your arrangement in an area away from heat sources like direct sunlight or room heaters, and out of any drafts. A cooler room will help the blooms to stay fresh longer.
After you have placed them:
Change the water everyday. If any film or green has started around the inside of the vase edge, you will need to remove the flowers and wash the vase thoroughly using a little bleach in the cleaning water. When you replace the water be sure you have it acidic enough. Put more floralife or solution of your choice in the water. Before returning the flowers to the water, rinse the stems to make sure they are not slimy.
Remove any dying leaves as soon as you notice them. Be sure no pieces of blossom or leaves have fallen into the water as this can cause growth of bacteria as the leaves rot. This also causes a very bad odor.
Re-cut the stems at an angle every few days.
With these tips your flowers or roses should last at least a week or longer.
